The new gym area being built at the Aubigny Sports Centre in Haddington is nearly ready to welcome its first users.

The extension to the centre was handed over to East Lothian’s Health and Wellbeing charity, Enjoy Leisure, on Friday, 14 February to mark the completion of the main body of works.

East Lothian Council has delivered the £1.1 million project, which was funded through the council’s Section 75 developer contributions from new housing developments in Haddington.

With the building work complete, the existing gym will be closed on Monday, 17 February while gym equipment is being installed or moved.

Council staff will carry out resurfacing work in the centre’s car park - which will be closed from Tuesday, 18 February until Friday, 21 February - before the new gym is ready to open to the public. An official opening date is yet to be finalised.

The extension, which got underway last summer, will feature Pulse Fitness equipment including a large free weights area with half racks, cable pulleys, an adjustable Olympic bench, multi-functional plate loaded machine, dumbbells up to 50KG and benches.

A functional training space will also be created featuring a training rig, powerbags, kettlebells, suspension training equipment, sledge and high intensity training machines. More traditional cardiovascular equipment will be maintained including new stepmills and fixed resistance machines to cater for all the community.

Fantastic new addition

Cllr Colin McGinn, Cabinet Spokesperson for Community Wellbeing and Sport, Countryside and Leisure, said: “We are delighted this project is nearly complete and will soon be keeping centre users fit, healthy and active.

“By increasing the size of the existing building and providing a modern gym, the Aubigny Sports Centre will help meet the current and growing demand for high-quality sport and recreation facilities in the local area.”

Bill Axon, Chief Executive of Enjoy Leisure, said: “Working closely with our East Lothian Council partners on this project has been highly effective and we’ve shared the vision of delivering a top-notch facility. Together, we’ve ensured the new gym meets the needs of our community and we’re grateful for their teamwork on this.

“We look forward to welcoming new faces and members to this fantastic new addition, especially as our affordable and extensive monthly membership allows access to our facilities county wide, with no contracts, unlimited classes, and access to our swimming pools and health suites.”
