A renewed play area offering an exciting and inclusive space for toddlers to teens has proved a popular addition to the community in Tranent.
The Muirpark Play Area on Ormiston Road now features natural play elements and a new accessible pathway to enable those with a range of mobilities to reach it. Seating, benches and bins have been added along with accessible rubber safety surfacing on the ground.
East Lothian Council allocated Scottish Government Play Parks Renewal Funding to carry out the work as the existing play equipment reached the end of its lifespan and required to be replaced.
The consultation process gave opportunities for a range of play equipment options to be considered and prioritised. Around 150 replies were received and input from children and young people to help finalise the design. Findings and recommendations from the council’s recent East Lothian Play Sufficiency Assessment were also taken into account.
Marked increase in use
The facility was designed to be challenging and inclusive for an age range up to 15-years-old.
Councillor Colin McGinn, the council’s Cabinet Spokesperson for Community Wellbeing and Sport, Countryside and Leisure, said: “The feedback we received via this consultation ensured that the new and improved play area meets local needs and includes as wide a range of new play experiences as possible, for a range of ages and abilities.
“It has been very pleasing to see a marked increase in use of the Muirpark Play Area in recent weeks since the renewed space opened, and we are very grateful to everyone, particularly the local children and young people, who contributed to this project or who took part in the consultation.”
