Preparatory work is well underway to enable repair work on Cockenzie Harbour to commence on Monday 16 December.

Once these enabling works are completed and approved, the harbour will be closed while repairs to the West Pier to address storm damage and ongoing deterioration due to wave action are carried out.

The harbour will be closed and unusable for safety reasons between Sunday 15 December and Sunday 22 December when work on the harbour wall is expected to take place.

The John Muir Way, from the west side of the Cockenzie Power Station site to the east side, will also be closed. A diversion will be in place along the B1348 on Edinburgh Road.

Funding for the work by East Lothian Council officers has been secured through the council’s capital budget.

Boat users have been informed and enabling works conducted to provide access for plant, equipment and materials.

Important and historical asset

Cllr John McMillan, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment, Economic Development and Tourism, said: “I am pleased work is going ahead to help repair and protect this important and historical asset to the community.

“Council officers have worked with Port Seton Community Council, the Harbour Master, and harbour users to put these arrangements in place and appreciate their support.”
