Resurfacing works are due to be undertaken on North Berwick’s High Street, Westgate and Church Street over seven days from 21 October excluding the weekend period.

The work will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption with the road closed during these periods for safety reasons. Council roads officers have been working closely with bus companies on the plans and will be visiting businesses to share information with them.

The work will be undertaken by ECR Surfacing on the council’s behalf as follows:

  • Phase 1 High Street (Section - Market Place to Church Road) closed Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 October. The one-way system will be reversed on Market Place to allow vehicles to leave from the east end of the High Street. Signage will be in place.
  • Phase 2 Westgate (Section - Church Road to Westend Place) closed Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Monday 28 October. During this period the one-way system will be reversed on Church Road to allow vehicles to leave from the east end of the High Street while Market Place will revert to normal. Meanwhile the one-way system on Westend Place will be reversed to allow vehicles to access the west end of Westgate and Abbey Road. Signage will be in place.
  • Phase 3 Church Road closed Tuesday 29 October.

Pedestrian and emergency vehicle access will be maintained throughout, refuse and recycling bins will be emptied as normal and local access will be maintained where practical to affected sections of road. A diversion route will be in place during each phase of works for all other traffic.

East Lothian Council’s Head of Infrastructure Tom Reid said: “Resurfacing of these areas has been carefully planned to minimise inconvenience to business and residents by, for example, undertaking works in phases and reversing the one-way systems on Market Place, Church Road and Westend Place at points to allow traffic and buses to continue to access the High Street as much as possible. Roads officers will be visiting businesses to let them know of the works and access arrangements during the period.

“We undertook temporary repair work in the area in March 2024 following discussions with North Berwick Community Council, and had plans in place to carry out this full resurfacing in Autumn outwith the town’s busy summer period to reduce impact. We are grateful to the local community for their support during the works which we know many have been keen to see progress.”
