National Records of Scotland issue annual statistics showing a reduction in alcohol related deaths in East Lothian for 2023.

Earlier today, Tuesday 10 September, The National Records of Scotland issued their annual statistical report on alcohol specific deaths for 2023.  For East Lothian, the report indicates a decrease in the number of alcohol related deaths from 19 in 2022, to 16 in 2023.  Each one of these deaths represents a tragic loss of life, and our condolences go out to the families and friends involved.

Reaching people affected by their alcohol use can be challenging, as they often lead isolated lives and face a number of related issues such as poor health, social isolation, mental health issues and poverty.  However, help is available to people in East Lothian through East Lothian’s Substance Use Service and partners Mid and East Lothian Drugs [MELD].

Further support is available through Edinburgh and Lothian Council on Alcohol [ELCA] providing a counselling service for individuals in Dunbar on Monday and the Esk Centre Thursday and Friday.

In addition, Access to Industry (in conjunction with Midlothian and East Lothian Drugs and Alcohol Partnership [MELDAP]) offer assistance into adult education and employment through the MELDAP Recovery College.

Understanding that some vulnerable individuals are hesitant to make contact with ‘official’ services, peer support workers meet individuals through peer group meetings and recovery cafes.   These are available across East Lothian including The Starfish Café in Musselburgh, The Ridge in Dunbar, Friday Friends in Haddington, Fa’side Café in Tranent and the Light House Cafe in Prestonpans.

Anyone who is worried about their, or others alcohol use can contact MELD.  By calling or texting 07843 339 958, individuals, concerned family members, or friends can engage in a confidential, trauma informed, person centred conversation focussed on addressing their concerns and needs.  From there the individual or caller will be directed to the most appropriate service or combination of services to gain support.  The MELD Contact Service is available Monday to Friday 9am-9pm, as well as having a 24/hr messaging service.
