The Armed Forces Flag is being proudly flown over the council’s offices in Haddington in recognition of the county’s support for its Armed Forces community.

Armed Forces Week 2024 is an opportunity to reflect on the contribution service personnel, their families, veterans and cadets organisations make to our national life. It runs from 24 June, ending on Armed Forces Day (29 June).

A flag-raising ceremony was held in Haddington this morning attended by the Scottish Veterans Commissioner Lieutenant Commander (retired) Susie Hamilton, General Secretary of Veterans Scotland Jim Wilson, East Lothian Council Chief Executive Monica Patterson, regular and reservist personnel, veterans and representatives from local veterans organisations and the council’s Armed Forces employees network.

Procession

After participating in a piped procession from the council’s John Muir House headquarters to Court Street, the assembled audience gathered beneath the Armed Forces Flag and Lord-Lieutenant Roderick Urquhart, His Majesty The King’s representative in East Lothian, thanked them for their attendance. He said:

“Showing our support for our armed forces provides a much valued and appreciated morale boost for all of our serving troops and their families. I want to thank all those in East Lothian who recognised and endorse the value and critical importance of our armed forces and who also help champion the various reservist and veteran groups across our county.”
