Essential information for residents following Met Office yellow weather warning for Storm Kathleen and a SEPA flood warning.
Southern Scotland is currently experiencing Storm Kathleen with wind speeds up to 50mph and gusts of 60-70mph possible in some exposed spots. Large waves may also create a risk along the coast.
SEPA has issued a flood alert for Edinburgh & Lothians from Sunday 7 through to Monday 8 April as there is a risk of coastal flooding around times of high water due to a combination of high tides, surge and waves. This also creates a risk of spray and high waves in exposed coastal locations as well as flooding of low-lying land and roads causing disruption to travel and potential isolated property flooding. East Lothian is also expected to experience high tides on Tuesday 9 April.
Please follow Met Office advice in relation to Storm Kathleen, surface water issues and high tides to keep yourself and your property safe:
- Be prepared in order to protect your property and avoid injury. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences
- Checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. Allow extra time if you are travelling
- Preparing in advance will help you in the event of a power cut. Consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items
- If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard
- Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly. Keep up to date with the weather forecast in your area and in particular any weather warnings.
