Schools across East Lothian are holding a range of dedicated activities as part of Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week 2023 (2-8 October).
The week aims to inspire and support every woman and girl in Scotland to get active. The national campaign, which was launched with a film featuring Scottish International Footballer Leanne Crichton, highlights that all women and girls can get involved regardless of age or ability. It also focuses on the physical, mental and social benefits that getting active and participating in sport or physical activity can bring.
Active Schools East Lothian have been working with school colleagues to maximise the opportunities for all girls to take part in an activity whether it’s something they’re familiar with or is totally new to them.
Amazing achievements
Ross High School has set up girls-only football, netball and hockey fixtures, extra-curricular and lunchtime clubs across the week. Musselburgh Grammar’s Young Ambassadors will be showcasing some of the amazing achievements from female sportspeople in their school via social media and running lunchtime girls-only activities. Dunbar Grammar has linked with Dunbar Primary School for a joint Girls Fitness Session and, along with Ross High, will be holding a Girls in Sport Day offering all female pupils the chance to participate in PE throughout the day.
Many schools already offer girls-only clubs, sports teams and activities throughout the term. This allows girls and young women the chance to try out activities with their friends, classmates and peers and build confidence and skills in sports and active pursuits.
Opportunities for everyone
Scott Marnoch, Sport and Physical Activity Co-ordinator at Dunbar Grammar School said: “Providing opportunities for everyone to participate and removing barriers is key to encouraging women and girls’ participation in sport and physical activity. Our Active Schools are supporting Women and Girls in Sport week to celebrate and ignite a passion in sport and exercise. Being active brings so many benefits that can be drawn upon to maintain a happy healthy life both physically and mentally.”
