A multi-agency incident response group meeting was held this afternoon to update information around an incident of a fire at the Valencia Waste Management Ltd site outside Dunbar.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been in attendance and continue to monitor the situation and have advised that the fire is ‘under control and being managed by the site operator, though may continue to burn for many days.’
SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) have also been in attendance and working with East Lothian Council Protective Services and have confirmed that the site is authorised to dispose of non-hazardous waste.
The current wind direction is blowing the plume of smoke away from main housing areas but general health advice is to keep windows and doors closed and avoid being outside for long periods of time if the smoke is particularly bad.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have advised that, if travelling through smoke, motorists should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.
Members of the public are advised not to report this incident which is being managed.
Further updates will be issued as appropriate.
