New off-peak charge tariffs for EVs

East Lothian Council is extending its use of peak/off-peak pricing to more of its car chargers to reflect the carbon-intensity of the electricity grid and to encourage people to charge their vehicle outwith the 4-8pm period when demand for electricity is greatest. These are the times when wind, hydro and solar power are most likely to be supplemented with nuclear, or by imported carbon-intensive gas or coal-generated power.

Peak and off-peak pricing is already available on the council's Fuuse and Connected Kerb networked chargers and this is being extended on a  trial basis with some of the ChargePlace Scotland networked chargers.

The following changes will apply on the specified chargers from 1 March 2023. There will also be £1 per minute overstay fees (capped at £30) on the council's 43kW+ Journey chargers rather than the fixed £30 fee currently applied. Details below.

This trial will inform the introduction of a similar pricing model to the remainder of the network later this year when the council tariffs are reviewed against our energy and operating costs, and comparable commercial operators.
