East Lothian Council's Road Services team are responsible for the maintenance of more than 16,800 roadside gullies.
With so many gullies you will appreciate we can't service them all at the same time and that is why we have a programme of cyclic maintenance.
During the winter period when we respond to a call out for a blocked drain on the road, we find that the grate is typically covered by wet leaves or grass, which act like a plug and stops the water flowing freely.
If you see that a gully in your street has become blocked by leaves which can be easily brushed away, we would ask that you brush the blockage to one side - if it is safe to do so and without putting yourself or others at risk.
Gather up the leaves and dispose of them if you can.
During flood conditions, we provide a reactive service to clear overflowing ditches, gullies and drains on roads and pavements.
