A new website has been launched with a range of weekly activities to help families and children prepare for the transition to Primary One.

Each week is built around a song, with ideas for parents to support their children’s development of key skills such as communication, independence and resilience, gross and fine motor skills and preparing for change.

Ready, Steady, Sing is aimed at anyone with a child who will be starting Primary One and can be used alongside any other activities or advice from their early years setting.

Week 1 focuses on rainbows, using the song “I can Sing a Rainbow”. Complementary activities range from reading a story, spotting rainbow shapes in buildings and natural environments, identifying colours and playing with numbers. They are designed to support existing activities within the home and will also help grow families’ confidence about the next step in their child’s learning journey.

New activities will be launched on Mondays each week until Monday 22 June (week 5) to tie-in with the end of term-time, however they can be undertaken at any time.

East Lothian Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services Councillor Shamin Akhtar said: “This is a lovely project and I would encourage anyone with nursery-aged children to look at it. The activities are gentle and fun but have a lot of learning value. It’s also a nice way for siblings to support one another. We all want to help our children make the move from nursery to school and this is another lovely way to support them.”
