When we last spoke to Cameron during Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019 he was based within East Lothian Works completing a Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration.

You get your qualification at the end so you’re already trained.

It was a role he was enjoying and his positive contribution to the team was appreciated by his colleagues.

12 months on, Cameron has completed his apprenticeship and has successfully secured permanent employment within the council’s Housing and Property Maintenance service. He believes his apprenticeship was the perfect grounding for his current role as a Senior Business Support Assistant.

“The apprenticeship prepared me with office experience suited to the environment as well as people skills. You get your qualification at the end so you’re already trained and potential employers know you have the experience,” he says.

Having built up strong relationships with colleagues, Cameron was delighted to secure a permanent position, saying: “I was pleased to be able to stay – I really wanted to continue with the council.”

His apprenticeship gave him experience in every aspect of business administration and office management with all of the variety and responsibility of a busy office environment. Having moved departments, Cameron has transferred his skills to a new team and is enjoying his step up the career ladder to a more senior position, explaining: “It’s a bit more challenging.”

Cameron’s experiences highlight the career progression opportunities that Modern Apprenticeships can provide. Diane Tod who manages the council’s business support team said: “The apprenticeship programme offers advantages to us when recruiting permanent staff as we know that the candidates will have the necessary skills and background to carry out business administration to the high standard we need.”

If you're interested in following in Cameron's footsteps, we currently have a vacancy available for a Modern Apprentice in East Lothian Works. Find out more about the position and how to apply from Myjobscotland.
