As we approach bonfire season, make sure you know the law relating to fireworks.
Fireworks, including sparklers, for private use are available to buy from licensed sellers from:
- 15 October to 10 November
- 26 to 31 December
- Diwali and the 3 days before Diwali
- the first day of and the 3 days before Chinese New Year
You must be over 18 to buy adult fireworks. These are category 2 and 3 fireworks which include rockets and roman candles. Category 4 fireworks can only be used by professionals.
Fireworks should only be used in private places between 6pm and 11pm except for:
- Bonfire Night, (5 November) when the cut off is midnight
- New Year’s Eve, Diwali, and Chinese New Year, when the cut off is 1am
Using fireworks safely
- follow safety rules written on packaging
- keep a safe distance
- do not cause a nuisance to others
- minimise disruption to others
- follow the fireworks code
- read firework guides, advice and help
Licensing
All traders who intend to store fireworks must be licensed on an annual basis.

Reporting
The law says you must not set off or throw fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or other public places. You can be fined up to £5,000 and imprisoned for up to 6 months for selling or using fireworks illegally.
