There are currently 121 outdoor play areas owned and managed by East Lothian Council and are maintained by the Amenity Services Play Squad.  These can be located on the interactive Google Map below.

East Lothian Council offer play areas which offer a range of fun, challenging and interesting play opportunities and equipment, varying from location to location. Play areas must meet the needs of a range of ages and abilities and there is a focus on accessibility and inclusion.

Our aims is to ensure that play area equipment provides a good range of individual activities that enable swinging, rotating, climbing, balance, scrambling, sliding, resting, meeting etc. The play equipment provision should cover all age groups (from 0 to 17 years old) and include provision for children with a range of abilities including disabilities.

United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child

Children’s right to play is enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Research has demonstrated both the individual and societal benefits of play for children and young people. It’s now known that play leads to a wide range of beneficial outcomes across the cognitive, physical, emotional and social developmental areas. It has also been shown that play has positive societal outcomes through building healthier and more tolerant societies.
