Play ThemesEast Lothian Council provides play areas that are diverse and engaging, and each location offers a unique mix of fun, challenging, and imaginative play opportunities and equipment. These play areas are designed to cater to a wide range of ages and abilities, with a strong emphasis on accessibility and inclusion.
Our objective is to ensure that the equipment in these play areas offers a variety of individual activities such as swinging, rotating, climbing, balancing, scrambling, sliding, resting, and socialising. The play equipment is intended to serve all age groups, from infants to teenagers (0 to 17 years old), and is inclusive of children with varying abilities.
Children’s right to play is enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Research has demonstrated both the individual and societal benefits of play for children and young people. It’s now known that play leads to a wide range of beneficial outcomes across the cognitive, physical, emotional and social developmental areas. It has also been shown that play has positive societal outcomes through building healthier and more tolerant societies.
