Net zero
Net zero refers to balancing the amount of greenhouse gas emitted and the amount removed from the atmosphere. Net zero is reached when the amount of greenhouse gases added is no more than the amount taken away over a defined period.
The UK along with 109 other countries committed to achieve Net Zero by 2050. This was agreed in 2015 at COP21 in Paris to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Scotland has pledged to achieve Net Zero by 2045
