Deferring entry to Primary School

Traditionally in Scotland almost all children start primary school aged between 4 ½ and 5 years old.

For session 2025/26, children who have not had their 5th birthday by the date school starts on 13 August 2025 are entitled to another year of funded early learning and childcare.  This is available to children who turn 5 years of age from 14 August 2025 to 28 February 2026.

This does not mean that all parents with children in this age group will choose to take up the option.

Apply for an additional year of Early Learning and Childcare

Staff in your Early Learning and Childcare setting will be able to explain the process and will support you to make an informed decision and discuss any concerns.

Applications for session 2025/26 open on Monday 2 December 2024 and close on Monday 27 January 2025.

Apply for deferral now

When you will be notified of the decision

Applications received by Monday 27 January 2025 will receive confirmation of their request to defer by email in February 2025.  Applications submitted after the closing date will not receive confirmation until after the Easter school break and places may no longer be available in their chosen setting.
