What are social care services?
Social care services cover a wide range of activities to provide help and support to people in need, such as individuals with health conditions, mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, as well as vulnerable adults and children.
Personal care support
This can include assistance with washing, dressing, feeding and toileting.
Personal care is free in Scotland for adults (of any age) requiring this support.
Home care support
This is when care support is provided in your own home. There is generally a charge for home care support, however how many an invidiual contributes is based on a financial assessment. It may involve regular visits from a support worker or health and social care services to assist with:
- nursing care
- general cleaning, housework, laundry
- shopping
- meal preparation or delivery
- assistance with taking prescribed medication

Equipment and adaptations to your home
Installing equipment and using technology can be a quick and effective means of supporting you to live safely and independently at home. This could include:
- using equipment like shower grab rails or commodes
- adapting your home by widening doors or installing a ramp
- getting telehealth and telecare equipment so your health and care is monitored remotely
- using everyday technology like a computer to do online shopping

Community activities
Enjoying an active social life is just as important for your mental health and well as your physical health.
Across East Lothian a number of sports, leisure and social activities are available depending on your interests.
- Adult Day Centres: provide a range of activities within a dedicated building base setting.
- Lunch Clubs: are an opportunity for people to come together and enjoy meals together.
- Resource Centres: provide a wide range of services specifically for individuals with learning and physical disability needs

Residential care
As we get older, most people want to stay at home in their own homes for as long as possible. Our aim is to support people to achieve this wherever possible.
Residential care / care homes, are for individuals requiring more care support that they can get in their own home or in supported housing.
