Markle Level Crossing
The close proximity of Markle Level Crossing to the new station at East Linton indicated an increased safety risk, which would not be fully mitigated by the previous road traffic light signals, half-barrier equipment, an audible alarm and signage.
The increased risk is due to the potential for road users to become impatient with the longer arrival time of stopping trains compared to non-stopping ones, weaving round the open gap in the opposite carriageway, and being struck by a train.
Having consulted on a range of options, the full closure of the level crossing was the preferred way forward and planning permission (22/01328/P) for a new road and bridge was secured in May 2023.
The works were fully funded by Transport Scotland.
