Transforming rural bus shelters into modular mobility hubs
Working with the Workforce Mobility Project, East Lothian Council has identifed the main bus stops which form focal points for sustainable transport in our towns and villages. The full report is available here and, following on from this we have secured additional funding from Innovate UK to work with communities to design modular infrastructure to support public transport and local places.
The project will be managed by consultancy, Cenex, with support from Quarterre, and the key deliverables will be a set of designs for innovative bus shelters with additional modular elements that can be 'bolted on'. Consultation took place with communities in Musselburgh, Tranent and Pencaitland in October to help understand users' needs, and a follow-up exercise in January will allow groups and individuals to comment on the emerging designs.
In addition, the project will produce estimate the benefits of rolling out these shelters, looking at both likely emissions savings, and social benefits from the placemaking opportunity they present. These will be included in a guide for other local authorities on best practice.
This project is part of the Transport Decarbonisation Demonstrators programme, funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK.
