What is a Journey Hub?

East Lothian is taking a joined-up approach to public and sustainable transport, and working to create high-profile locations across the county which provide public, shared and active travel options alongside other facilities. In 2023, working with the Workforce Mobility Project, we identifed the main bus stops which form focal points for sustainable transport in our towns and villages. We call these Journey Hubs. Some of our more prominent examples can be found at:

  • Wallyford (Large interchange linking train services with local buses, parking and charging.)
  • Brunton Hall (Town cente hub, with buses, car club hire, taxis and car charging. Bike shop and parcel collection nearby)
  • Tranent South (Suburban hub with local bus services, car charging and demand-responsive-transport)
  • Pencaitland (Village hub at Pencaitland Bowling Club. Local buses, car charging and community-run bike hire scheme)

Additionally, East Lothian's eight rail stations also function as interchanges to other modes:

  • Musselburgh
  • Wallyford (as above)
  • Prestonpans
  • Longniddry
  • Drem
  • North Berwick
  • East Linton
  • Dunbar

We intend to develop the full network of over 30 Journey Hubs across the county as funding becomes available and opportunities arise, and as a first stage have secured funding to work with communities to design modular infrastructure to support public transport and local places.
