A study has been published examining options for safer active travel in the area around Law Primary and North Berwick High School.

Safer Active Travel - Law Primary and North Berwick High School, which was carried out by Peter Brett Associates and funded by Sustrans, sought to identify safety issues and concerns around both schools. It assessed ways to reduce car use on the school run by encouraging more pupils to walk or cycle to school. Stakeholder engagement and consultation started early in the project and continued throughout.

An action plan was developed covering a range of possible interventions which were assessed in term of cost, deliverability and to what degree they satisfied the objectives of the study. They were then subjected to a weighting exercise and prioritised accordingly. Four key actions will be taken forward:

  • Undertake feasibility Study to redesign Grange Road/ Haddington Road junction;
  • Open up the Law Primary School Staff access (Old Haddington Road) to pedestrians and cyclists;
  • Identify and undertake easily implementable actions such as rationalisation of street furniture and bins as well as cutting back of foliage to maximise usable footway width; and
  • Undertake a feasibility study into improvements to Haddington Road/Lochbridge Road junction.

In addition to these physical measures, council officers will continue to work closely with the schools and local community to promote active travel modes.
