The National Entitlement Card (NEC) is a smartcard that offers people living in Scotland the opportunity to access national concessions, entitlements and a wide range of local services, including:
- transport
- libraries
- leisure
- cashless catering (school meals)
- discounts
The NEC has been developed for:
- convenience: it's easier for people to use just one card rather than many different ones to access services
- efficiency: it's easier for councils to administer
The NEC is currently available in two formats:
- Elderly and Disabled National Entitlement Card - this allows people aged 60+ and people with disabilities who live in Scotland to get free bus travel Scotland-wide
- Young Person's National Entitlement Card - for those aged 11-25 (inclusive)
