Our headquarters are in the market town of Haddington, which is approximately 20 miles from Edinburgh.  The population is centred around 6 main towns,  and extends from Musselburgh, the largest town, eastwards to Dunbar.  With over 40 miles of stunning coastline, golden beaches, rolling countryside, award-winning attractions, excellent food and drink and the world’s finest links golf courses.

East Lothian has a population of 112,300 and has seen significant and sustained growth over the last 20 years and is expected to grow further in the years ahead.

We have with 22 elected members and approximately 4,800 employees. We have an ambitious Council Plan and are recognised as a high-performing local authority with talented, committed and hard-working employees.

With increased demand for services and limited resources, our immediate focus is on maintaining the pace of transformation to deliver high-quality and efficient services whilst:

  • ensuring the financial sustainability of the council through the delivery of approved savings and transforming the way we deliver services
  • targeting resources on statutory services and focus on the highest risks and those most in need
  • delivering key infrastructure, economic development and environmentally sustainable projects within available council resources and maximising external funding

This role requires exceptional leadership

Our Heads of Service are critical in supporting and identifying opportunities to transform services whilst supporting change across the council. In doing so our Heads of Service should identify opportunities to work collaboratively across services with partners, community representatives, and external organisations.

Our Executive Directors and our Heads of Service are tasked with providing the strategic vision to support colleagues in delivering the council’s corporate plans, priorities and objectives – with the needs of our communities and those who rely on our services at their heart.
