Recycling Centre online booking system for vans and vehicles towing a trailer

How the system works

  • residents must book online through myeastlothianfind out more about myeastlothian and register online
  • slots can be booked in advance - bookings can be made on the same day you intend to visit if slots are available
  • if you are hiring a vehicle, you should input the word “HIRED” as the vehicle registration number and bring the short-term hire agreement with you - please note that short-term hired vehicles will be classed as a hire of three days or less
  • the twelve visits per year fair usage policy remains in place
  • after booking you will receive an automatic email confirming the date of your visit, which recycling centre and what you are bringing - bring this email with you as proof of booking for your visit

Vehicles required to book

  • any van regardless of size
  • any vehicle towing a trailer

There are some exemptions

  • large vehicles that have been modified to accommodate a passenger who travels in a wheelchair do not need to book
  • people carriers and camper vans do not need to book when a small amount of waste is being deposited - however if the additional space is being used to carry a large amount of waste or interior fixtures (such as seats) have been removed then you must pre book your visit

What to do on the day of your booking

  • arrive between 10am and 11:45am to allow yourself time to unload before midday
  • all vehicles will be checked upon arrival - if there is no booking you will not be allowed access

Trade or commercial waste

We do not accept waste that has come from any business or commercial source. This should be disposed of at a properly licenced waste disposal facility.

Recycling permit holders

Permit holders do not have to book to use the Recycling Centre, but do have to show a valid permit on each occasion they visit the centre.

Access in a van will only be permitted between 10:00am and 11:45am and only to deposit items specified on the permit. Any attempt to dispose of items not listed will result in the permit being withdrawn with no refunds given.

Reasons behind the change

The booking system and change of access times will:

  • increase safety for all site users by managing large vehicles on site
  • reduce the volume of trade waste being illegally deposited which is paid for, in part, by council taxpayers
  • reduce queuing before the centres open and impact on road network for other vehicles
  • allow residents to hire a van and use it to gain access to the centres on the same day
  • prevent vehicles from outwith the county using the service intended for East Lothian residents
