Special Landscape Areas
Certain areas within East Lothian are designated as Special Landscape Areas (SLA). The purpose of designating Special Landscape Areas is to recognise the particular value of these landscapes in maintaining the distinctive sense of place in different areas of East Lothian. It is to make sure that these landscapes are not damaged by inappropriate development, and sometimes, to encourage positive landscape management. The purpose is not to prevent development, though some types of development may not be compatible with the aims of designation. Each Special Landscape Area has a Statement of Importance summarising each area’s special features and qualities. You can view or download the adopted Special Landscape Areas SPG Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.
